Naomi Novik was born in 1973 in New York as the child of an eastern European immigrant family.
She studied English Literature at Brown University in Providence (RI) and graduated as a Master in Computer Science at Columbia University in New York.

After studying she worked for the well known Canadian game developers at BioWare, where she worked on the development of the PC role playing game "Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Unrentide". Finally she discovered that the writing of books interested her more than developing computer games, so she quit her job at BioWare and began working on her first novel.

"His Majesty's Dragon", or "Temeraire" in Great Britain, was released in January 2006. In this novel she tells of an alternative version of the Napoleonic Wars, where dragons exist and play an important role in the struggle of the different war parties. The protagonist William Laurence, actually a captain of the ship HMS Reliant, is after the discovery of a dragon egg aboard a French fregate unwillingly made the compagnion of the newly hatched dragon Temeraire and henceforth stands in the center of conflicts between France and England.

After January 2006 three more novels of the Temeraire series were published: "Throne of Jade", "Black Powder War" and "Empire of Ivory". The fifth book, "Victory of Eagles", on which she is currently working, will be published in Summer 2008.

Currently, Naomi Novik lives in New York and is married to publisher and author Charles Ardai.
